It all began when we were wandeing the forests one night and found several interesting things in one area of campus. Behind the Gym are a series of shelters of various sorts, probably made by the ROTC or some winter survival class. They include a pit-shelter, leanto, and a tree tent sort of thing which may have been built by drunk students as it is equipped with chairs and beer bottles.

The most interesting of these shelters was a small cave, which appeard to be a slightly enlarged fox den, about big enough for two people to crawl in and lay down. On several weekends when we had nothing better to do, we took it upon ourselves to enlarge this cave (One idea was that it would be a good place to pass out after doing some underage drinking). We bought small garden shovels and folding military entrenching tools and began digging out shitloads of dirt from the hill, removing it all through the original inadequate 2ft diameter entrance tunnel. We had quite a tailings pile going outside the entrance before it snowed, so anyone walking in the woods would have known something odd was up.

Eventually we got down to permafrost, or at least harder ground that we didn't feel like digging through. Explosive charges were used with little success other than bringing down part of the cieling (not with anyone inside of course!) By that time we had a space big enough to comfortably hold 5 people, space to stand in the middle, bench seats carved around the sides, and the same 2ft diameter, 6 foot long crawl tunnel the use of which rendered people completely filthy.

At this point we pretty much gave up and admitted that this was pointless, a little later we found a bunch of household junk at the dump and moved it into the cave for a photo shoot, it was supposed to be for a joke paper about homeless students, but that hasn't happened yet either. Recently several people I've talked to have mentioned the cave; I've heard various rumors about the "homeless guy" who lives there, how he has all kinds of books and a TV and Radio, I've even heard tthat he has a buried extension cord up from the gym (I dunno where this rumor came from). Someday we'll go down and add to the collection of junk in there...
